A Melbourne graphic design agency for identities, design systems, books, exhibitions and campaigns.
Identity Design & Design Systems
An identity is the mark, the type, the colour and the voice. A design system lets other people use them well: the grid, the components and the rules, each with its reason written in, because guidelines without reasons get ignored. We design both from the same brand strategy, and every rule answers to the idea.
Bermuda Coffee Studio’s mark is a pour-over cone and the drip that forms as it leaves a portafilter. Gather Round’s identity has its own typeface, Gather Sans.
- Brand identity and logo design
- Custom typefaces, marks and icons
- Design systems and component libraries
- Guidelines with the reasons written in
What is the difference between an identity and a design system?
The identity is what the brand looks and sounds like. The design system is how it gets made again and again by people who weren’t in the room: grids, type scales, components, rules and worked examples. An organisation with several products, venues or teams usually needs both.
Book & Editorial Design
We design long-form work from the content outward. We start with the reading: what a reader meets first, what sits beside what, and how they move through it. The grid and the typography follow. The Ninch, our guide to the Mornington Peninsula, curates places and the stories of locals doing interesting things, online and in print.
- Books
- Annual reports and long-form publications
- Magazines and journals
- Editorial websites
Do you manage printing for books and publications?
We design to your printer’s specifications, prepare the files and check the proofs with them. Paper, printing and binding are quoted by the printer, and we can help you choose.
Campaigns & Presentation Design
A campaign and a presentation both make one argument to one audience, in a set order. We find the argument first, then design the key visual, the art direction and the sequence that carries it. DRIFT’s campaign ran on billboards, scrims, bus shelters and station screens. Commonfolk’s Specialty Coffee Is Dead campaign carried a new category, Partnership Coffee, from print to social.
- Campaign concepts and key visuals
- Art and photography direction
- Pitch, investor and keynote presentations
- Launch campaigns
When is a presentation worth designing?
When a lot rides on it: a raise, a tender, a launch, a talk to a room that matters. We work on the argument and the order before the slides, and design the deck to work in the room and when it is read on its own.
Exhibition Design & Packaging
People walk through an exhibition and pick up a pack, so material and scale matter as much as what is on the page. For an exhibition we design the show’s identity, wall graphics, captions and wayfinding with your curators and builders. For packaging we design the range as a system, down to print-ready files. Bermuda Coffee Studio’s triangular labels put altitude, variety, process and farm on the front of the bag. More on packaging design.
- Exhibition identities and graphics
- Captions, wall text and wayfinding
- Packaging and label systems
- Print-ready artwork and production
Do you work with our printer or fabricator?
Yes. We supply files to their specifications and check the proofs and samples with them before anything is made. Printing, fabrication and installation are quoted by them.
A clear process from the first question to the finished work.
Questions
What the work has to say, who has to understand it and what it is up against. For an identity or a design system, this is a two-week audit.
Structure
The idea and the order it unfolds in: what comes first, what holds it together, what can go.
Design
Type, image, grid and material, each decision tied to the idea and tested at real size.
Production
Print-ready and build-ready files, with proofs and samples checked with your printer or fabricator.
Stewardship
Guidelines and the reasons behind them, so the work keeps its shape when other people pick it up. We stay on for the next edition, the next show and the next campaign.
A branding agency works out what a business stands for and designs the identity that expresses it. A graphic design agency gives form to content: identities, books, exhibitions, campaigns, presentations and packaging. The two meet in identity design and design systems, and we work on both sides. If the strategy isn’t settled yet, start with brand strategy.
Identity and design system work is priced from the bands we publish.
- Brand Audit (two weeks): competitor map, perception read, positioning options, a recommendation with a price for each path. The audit fee comes off the strategy fee if you go on.
- Brand Strategy ($15,000–$25,000): positioning, purpose, audience mapping and brand narrative.
- Brand Identity Design ($25,000–$45,000): the visual and verbal system on a strategic foundation, with guidelines.
- Full Brand ($45,000–$75,000+): strategy and identity end to end, for a business repositioning for growth or a group bringing several names under one.
Books, exhibitions, campaigns and presentations are quoted on their scope after a first conversation, and your quote sets out every piece it covers before anything starts. Printing and fabrication are quoted by your suppliers. Get in touch.
No. We don’t design one-off flyers, posters, menus, templates or ad hoc collateral. Our work is the identity and its system, and the significant projects that follow from it: a book, an exhibition, a campaign. For a single piece, a good freelance designer will be quicker and cheaper.
Yes. Most books, exhibitions and campaigns start from an identity that already exists. We read your guidelines, work out what the project needs from them, and tell you early if the project will expose gaps in the system.
A freelance graphic designer suits a known job with a clear brief. A studio suits work where the brief is part of the problem, or where several disciplines have to work together. Many businesses keep a graphic designer in Melbourne on hand for the day-to-day, working within the system we design.
Commercial and cultural clients in hospitality, coffee and FMCG, property, healthcare, professional services, eCommerce, and arts and festivals.
